Jones Welsh (www.joneswelsh.com) is a choreographer, movement director, and arts activist. After training in gymnastics at Cascade Elite, Jones received a double degree in theater and dance from the University of Washington in 2000, and moved to New York and Los Angeles to claim a career in acrobatic performance, high-octane dance, and stunt choreography.
Jones has a rich performance history, having toured internationally for five seasons with the acclaimed Diavolo / Architecture in Motion, a company specializing in acrobatic dance on large moving structures. He then became the Associate Artistic Director & Diavolo Institute Director, working with the company choreographically and establishing sustainable community outreach programs in Los Angeles. Two of his collaborations with the company were premiered at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008 and 2011 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Jones’ choreographic style always includes athletic and acrobatic movement, dynamic imagery and partnering, as well as elements of character and emotion. He has been commissioned to create many movement pieces for CSU Los Angeles, University of Alabama Birmingham, the Getty Villa, among others. His most recent projects were a commissioned dance by Jacaranda Music in Los Angeles, Jones was hired to co-create a 45-minute solo with dance legend Gary Bates for the epic Peter Maxwell Davies composition of Vesalii Icones in January 2015. Another collaborative project with SpectorDance entitled East West, premiered in Monterey and remounted in Los Angeles, which targets the subject of gang violence and its effect on the community.
Jones is one of three NEW Co-Artistic Directors of Not Man Apart - Physical Theatre Ensemble, and has done movement direction and choreography on every major Not Man Apart production since 2009, including Pericles Redux, Titus Redux, Falling, Hercules Furens, Ajax In Iraq, and now The SuperHero and his Charming Wife.
