Jones Welsh (www.joneswelsh.com) is a choreographer, movement director, and arts activist. After training in gymnastics at Cascade Elite, Jones received a double degree in theater and dance from the University of Washington in 2000, and moved to New York and Los Angeles to claim a career in acrobatic performance, high-octane dance, and stunt choreography.
Jones has a rich performance history, having toured internationally for five seasons with the acclaimed Diavolo / Architecture in Motion, a company specializing in acrobatic dance on large moving structures. He then became the Associate Artistic Director & Diavolo Institute Director, working with the company choreographically and establishing sustainable community outreach programs in Los Angeles. Two of his collaborations with the company were premiered at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008 and 2011 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Jones’ choreographic style always includes athletic and acrobatic movement, dynamic imagery and partnering, as well as elements of character and emotion. He has been commissioned to create many movement pieces for CSU Los Angeles, University of Alabama Birmingham, the Getty Villa, among others. His most recent project was commissioned by Jacaranda Music in Los Angeles, Jones was hired to co-create a 45-minute solo with dance legend Gary Bates for the epic Peter Maxwell Davies composition of Vesalii Icones in January 2015. In addition to creating his own works, Jones also collaborates with other theater and dance companies: he is currently collaborating with SpectorDance on a remount of the East West project that targets the subject of gang violence and its effect on the community.
Jones is one of three Artistic Directors of Not Man Apart - Physical Theatre Ensemble, and has done movement direction and choreography on every major Not Man Apart production since 2009, including Pericles Redux, Titus Redux, Falling, Hercules Furens, and Ajax In Iraq.
“What’s most important to me is that my art brings people together and has social relevance to affect real and substantial change.”
